How To Get Your Site Listed in Google

Google has emerged as one of, if not the , top search engine. After a new site is built, one of the first questions is, "when will it show up in Google?" Google does accept site submissions, but makes no guarantee that they will add submitted URLs to their index. Google also uses the Open Directory and "crawls" the Internet to find new sites for its index.

Difficulty:  Easy

Time Required:  Five minutes to do; weeks to see results.

Here's How:

1.   Think of two or three search terms that you expect people to use most often when looking for a site like yours.

2.   Write a 25 word (or less) summary of your site, using the search terms you selected. The description should not be promotional in nature, just informative and concise.

3.   Submit your site directly to Google . A form will request your URL and comments. Comments or descriptions are not required here, and do not affect how your listing will be displayed.

4.   Submit your site to DMOZ , the Open Directory Project. First, select the best category for your listing. On that category page, click on "Submit URL," at the top right of the page.

5.   Follow the DMOZ instructions. Use your 25 word description here

6.   Build links to your site from other sites you own, or request links from related sites. The more links there are to your site the more likely Google is to find and list you.

7.   Wait about a month :) It usually takes about that long for Google to list you.

8.   If you are impatient, or if Google fails to list you after a month or so, you should investigate paying for a listing using Google Adwords.
